Optic neuropathy after COVID-19 vaccination: Case report and systematic review

To report a case of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) following COVID-19 vaccination and provide systematic review all published cases vaccination. A literature search was performed using PubMed Ovid MEDLINE for Terms used in the included “COVID-19 vaccination”, “optic neuropathy”, neuritis”, “ischemic neuropathy”. Titles abstracts were initially screened then full texts eligible studies reviewed data extraction. Only English language, peer reviewed, that details on nerve involvement included. All study types inclusion. Including our patient, total 10 patients (8 females) identified as developing Five (50.0%) diagnosed with AION, while 4 (40.0%) neuritis. One patient papillitis neuroretinitis. Three (30.0%) had bilateral involvement. Mean age 48.5±19.7 years. time from to onset ophthalmic symptoms 6.5±6.4 days. Median (IQR) presenting visual acuity logMAR 0.3 (0-1). For 8 eyes which both final follow-up acuity, median vision 0.2 (0-0.7) at 0 (0-0.05) (P=0.184). may result form neuritis neuropathy.
